Job Description: Special Projects Manager

Reports to: Executive Director

Status: Part-time Hourly

Est. weekly commitment: 10 hrs/wk

Est. project duration: 24 months

Compensation: $60-90/hour commensurate with experience

Bike Newport Mission: to create the conditions that lead to more people biking more often, and to ensure that bicycling is a viable, safe, and comfortable primary choice for transportation and recreation.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Special Projects Manager will support and advance Bike Newport’s mission to promote safer, more accessible, and equitable biking and walking environments, with a special focus on large infrastructure projects in the region, such as shared-use path connectivity to and from Aquidneck Island. https://www.newportri.com/story/news/local/2024/05/22/federal-funds-support-bike-path-feasibility-study-on-bridges/73777230007/

The ideal candidate will have a passion for active transportation, a commitment to social justice, and federal transportation grant management experience. This role involves working closely with consultants, stakeholders, government officials, and partner organizations to successfully advance infrastructure improvements that support pedestrians and cyclists.

Job Specific Responsibilities:

RFP Management:

  • Draft a request for proposals (RFP) for a qualified engineering firm to complete a study for the addition of shared-use paths and observation areas on the Jamestown Verrazzano and Newport Pell Bridges that will attract a number of respondents and provide readers with a clear understanding of the undertaking
  • Create and support a project management team (PMT) of Bike Newport staff and board members, local officials, Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority (RITBA), and Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) representatives
  • Solicit and update the RFP based on feedback from the PMT
  • Advertise the RFP
  • Mange the RFP question and answer process
  • Receive and compile submitted proposals for review by the PMT
  • Assist the PMT in selecting the project consultant

Project Management:

  • Serve as the intermediary between the PMT, the consultant, and the broader community
  • Ensure timely submission for grant reimbursement and consultant pay
  • Keep the project on schedule
  • Promptly address issues with the appropriate level of intervention as they arise
  • Provide executive level monthly project reports (direct, succinct, comprehensive, informative)

Bike Newport is an exciting fast-paced leader in bicycle advocacy. We bring together community programs and leaders to establish positive outcomes for bicycling in Newport and Aquidneck Island, and to influence statewide bicycle planning. Our goal is to get more people on bicycles for both recreation and transportation, and we make progress by focusing on three primary areas: safe road infrastructure, road sharing education, and building bicycle culture. We work with intention to ensure equity in access, participation, and leadership, with a focus on removing obstacles to bicycling such as location, personal mobility, income, language, gender, culture, race, and more.

All Bike Newport staff are directly involved in the organization’s programs, and all staff complete training in bicycle riding, basic bike maintenance. All staff agree to follow the rules of the road, bike for transportation as much as possible, and serve as role models and advocates for safe cycling practices.
