POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Save The Bay seeks a Habitat Restoration Technician to provide field support to our Habitat Restoration program staff on salt marsh and river restoration projects. The Habitat Restoration Technician will conduct field work, including invasive plant management, salt marsh restoration activities, native planting projects, and habitat assessments of river and coastal habitats. This position will primarily consist of field work and will often require the applicant to work full 7-hour days outdoors under variable weather conditions, including hot and cold weather.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide support for coastal wetland and riverine restoration projects.
- Control invasive species using hand tools and gas-powered equipment.
- Install and maintain native plantings.
- Collect geospatial data and provide GIS and mapping support.
- Assist with restoration monitoring including vegetation surveys, elevation surveys, bird counts, and the installation and maintenance of water level loggers and wildlife cameras.
- Assist in the organization, maintenance, and collection of supplies and equipment.
- Perform data entry, data analysis and quality assurance tasks.
- Write monitoring reports.
- Oversee volunteers and interns on restoration projects.
- Perform outreach and education tasks associated with restoration projects including, participating in walking tours and public programming.
- Provide timely communication on restoration activities to members of the Habitat Restoration team.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- BS or BA in conservation or natural resources or related field.
- Field work experience is required; background in ecological restoration or environmental science or a related field is a plus.
- Ability to perform strenuous field work, including digging, planting, cutting invasive plants, and monitoring under a range of weather conditions during all months of the year.
- Experience in the use and maintenance of hand tools and mechanized equipment (string-trimmers, chainsaws, etc.).
- Proficient with GIS.
- Experience with Microsoft Excel and Word.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Motivated and skilled at working independently and as part of a team.
- Experience with plant identification of native and invasive plants.
- Experience leading volunteers in outdoor work or other experience with public engagement.
- Ability to stay organized and juggle multiple tasks at different restoration sites.
- Consistent attention to detail.
SALARY & BENEFITS:
The Restoration Technician is a grant-funded, part-time – 28hrs per week -position. with the possibility of full-time hours in the spring and summer, Hourly rate of $20 per hour.
