Full Job Description

With the mission as a guide, the role of the Assistant Director is one of support and balance between the Director and support staff. The responsibilities of the Assistant Director are in conjunction with, and in addition to, all of the essential functions of the Direct Support Professional position, and is not limited to the following:

Essential Functions

  • Serves as a role model to support staff, teaching by example.
  • Ensures that the people supported are free from abuse, neglect and mistreatment. Reporting any concerns immediately to the Director and/or Administration.
  • Maintaining a positive flow of communication with team members. Be proactive in expressing concerns to the Director as well as feedback.
  • Communicating with support staff when issues arise, relay issues and outcomes to the Director in a timely fashion. This includes assisting with on-call issues when on shift.
  • Remain flexible in scheduling, filling-in as needed.
  • Attending and participating in Team Meetings, Resource Team Meetings, Assistant Director Meetings and ISPs as scheduled and as needed. Assist the Director in developing agenda for Team Meetings.
  • Take the lead in empowering people supported and support staff.
  • Continue to communicate with support staff regarding the need for on-going training. Ensuring programs are being carried out consistently, human rights issues are being met, choices offered and community integration/relationships are a constant focus.
  • Be mindful of confidentiality at all times, relaying and teaching this to Direct Support Professionals, as well.
  • Being knowledgeable of, adhering to and promoting agency policy and standards.
  • Assists with all scheduling hours, changes, etc., to assure that no staff goes over 40 hours a week without authorization first, from the Director, or Administrator in the absence of the Director.
  • Assist in the planning and follow through of appointments specific to the individual’s needs.
  • When the Director has taken time off, acts as the Designee in all areas of significant event reporting and situations or emergencies as it pertains to the people supported, staffing and the program as a whole.
  • Proactive measures are taken to ensure the safety of all people supported
  • In conjunction with and at the direction of the Director, ensure the following
  • Daily documentation is completed
  • Safety Inspections are completed
  • Vehicles are kept in good condition, routine maintenance is completed, repairs are completed and emergency kits are kept stocked
  • Specialized equipment is kept in good condition
  • Maintain emergency food and supplies
  • Program is prepared for emergencies: weather related events, hospitalizations, medical appointments, etc.
  • Menu is posted and followed
  • Training of new staff by fulfilling requirements in the orientation packet and On-Shift Training Guide
  • Reconcile petty cash weekly by verifying receipts, completing reconciliation form and submitting to the business office
  • Firebooks are maintained, updated and submitted on schedule and as requested by Administration
  • Ensure that there is follow through on all requirements of the recreation calendar
  • Meeting with DSPs
  • Updating and sending on-call information and updates
  • Payroll, Billing One-Note and Attendance

Essential Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years of age with a high school diploma or GED
  • Employees that are responsible for the transportation of individuals supported must have a valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record. DSPs may be required to use their personal vehicle with proof of valid insurance, registration and inspection.
  • Ability to complete CPR, Safety Skills, Online Trainings and other required agency trainings
  • Employees that are responsible for the administration of medications to individuals supported must complete and carry out Medication Administration
  • Capable of effective oral and written communication
  • Capable of reading and comprehending policies and instruction, and use varying degrees of independent judgment and discretion
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations at all times

Essential Physical Demands:

Must be able to operate tools and equipment safely (agency van, phone, copy machine, overhead projector, computer and email). Must be able to exert up to 100 lbs with two people and lift up to 50 lbs independently. Physical demands are in excess of sedentary work as position frequently requires walking, driving, standing, sitting, reaching with hands/arms, kneeling, bending, twisting, stooping, pushing and pulling. Ability to carry out safety techniques and holds.

Participation indoors as well as outdoors during all seasons
